Learn how to go from to

Part 1: Colouring

1. Take your base. All I did here was crop and resize it.

2. I used a light, somewhat bright blue colour and set it on Color Burn at 20%.

I wanted to give the icon a few pink tones without it being overly pink. I took this pink shade and set it on Hard Light 100%

That looks gross, it's much too pink. You can always use the blending mode of "colour", you'll get a very similiar result to this step but it won't have the same dimension or depth.

4. I took my original base, copied it, and pasted it. I set it on Pin Light 100%.

Much less pink now, but it's still a little bland.

5. I used the same blue colour from before and set that on Soft Light.

The change is subtle, but the icon is slightly brighter. The flowers have more depth now and you can see the creases on her dress properly.

Part 2

6. Open up a new canvas. 100x100 pixels. If you're going to add text make sure the resolution is set to 72.

Fill the background with whatever colour you want. I chose this grey shade:

7. It's a little boring, and I wanted to add more depth. I created a new layer and used this gradient (default with Photoshop). Set the layer to Lighten 100%

8. Go back to your original image, that you just finished colouring. Paste it into your new background.

9. It needs a few more things, so I added a brush from ewanism's retro set in red.

I set the brush to Hard Light 100% so it doesn't burn your eyes!

10. I felt that I needed to add something to the upper portion of it. I used a brush from teh_indy's doodle pack in white.

This layer is set to Normal 100%.

and you're done! :)

Obviously the numbers and exact shades used aren't going to work for every single image. The easiest and best way to see which shade works for your image is to open up a new layer using the colour fill tool. Once you lower the opacity on a blending mode, double click on your layers palette. Move your curser around and look at how different shades affect the colour on your screen. Experiment.

Learn how to go from this to this

I've tried to detail everything, so this is suitable for beginners. It was made using PS7 and it should be translatable.

I didn't crop my image to 100x100 pixels because I wanted to see how it would turn out when I prepped it before I made it into a circle. It's easier to get a full circle when the original image is slightly bigger than 100x100, so I started off with this image:

I duplicated the image twice and both layers were set to screen.

Then I duplicated all my layers by clicking Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V. This allows you to paste the image into one layer without getting rid of all your previous layers. If you have trouble doing it, try it again. If not, you can always flatten the image (Image > Flatten), copy that layer, and then go back in your history to the step you took before flattening.

I set this layer to screen at 50%. Not much difference, I know, but it'll get better.

I decided her lips needed a bit more pink to them. I used the eyedropper tool and then created a new layer. I set this layer to Linear Dodge at 30% and carefully went over her lips. I then got this:

Flatten your image (Image > Flatten Image)

Now for the fun bit! Take the Elliptical Marquee Tool. If you can't find it, it's on the on the top of your left-hand menu next to the move tool, right above the lasso tool. If you can see a rectangle you will need to right-click it and select the elliptical tool.

Very carefully make a circle over your image so that you can still see her face. Try to get some of her hair into the circle so it frames her face. Click Ctrl+C and create a new layer. Paste the cropped image into this new layer and delete the background layer, which should have the original image that we have prepped.

Create a new layer and move it underneath the layer with Sydney. All the layers I mention for now will go underneath the layer with Sydney. Fill it with #65c7ff (a bright blue colour).

Create a new layer and paste this lovely texture by ewanism. Set the layer to Pin Light.

Paste this texture, also by ewanism (all textures in this tutorial are from them!) and set it to Color Burn.

Then take this texture and set it to Lighten. Copy it. Open a new window (ctrl+n) and paste it into this window. Go Image > Rotate Canvas > Flip Canvas Vertical. Copy this flipped image and paste it into your original document, above the one that's not rotated. Set the layer to Lighten. Now click on Add Vector Mask for BOTH of these textures. A new white image should appear in your layers palette next to the original images. Using a soft brush, select the white window and, on your canvas, delete the white parts of both textures. Your layers palette should look something like this:

The red arrow points to the vector mask - it allows you to see the circles behind Sydney.

Alternatively you could use the eraser for both images, but I prefer to use the vector mask as I can always delete it later.

Almost there! Now take this texture and set it to Color Burn.

Take this gradient by crumblingwalls and set it to Color Burn as well. It just adds a bit more blueness to the white sections on the left.

Now go back to the image of Sydney. This should be right at the top. Go Layer > Layer Style > Outer Glow. While we're at it, check the box next to inner glow (it's right underneath it).

One final step :) Last one - copy the layer of Sydney above the one we just added the effects on. Set this layer to Overlay. I used 40% but it will be different depending on your image. Something I do is just hit the 'down' arrow key in the Opacity bar until I see something I like.

You should now have this:
